David Newman

Resident in Southport for the past 7 years, David has previously lived and worked in India and the Middle East over his 37 year career, serving as Managing Director at Zurich Financial Services and Vice President in Citibank.

Before his stint abroad David was a local Councillor for 8 years. He and his partner have fostered children for many years; currently they have five foster children within their family.  He actively supports animal welfare issues – whether that is maintaining the current ban on hunting with dogs, or high standards in the meat industry (he has been a vegetarian for over 40 years), or the treatment and care of domestic animals.  Wherever they’ve lived in the world David’s family have always rescued dogs, at present they have a German Shepherd Dog.

David is appalled at what is happening in Gaza: 33,000 Palestinian civilians slaughtered by the Israeli military – including 14,000+ children – rising daily. The raids on refugee camps, the killing of aid workers, the bombing of hospitals, the denial of access to drinking water and food – the list of war crimes committed by the Israeli military is endless and tacitly supported by our Government. Of course we have no control over that, but we can decide what we do locally to show our outrage; Sefton Council have refused to hold a minute of quiet reflection in remembrance of those who have been annihilated (yet they held 2 separate such events for Ukraine). Where has our humanity gone?
