Cambridge: Local Election Candidate 2024
Stephen was born in Southport and has lived here virtually all his life.
He is a retired industrial chemist who previously worked in food packaging and related sectors. He has a lifelong interest in nature, local history, geology and gardening.
His chief political interests revolve around environmentalism, proportional representation and democratically empowered, sustainable communities and a deep belief in freedom and equality – not just for the fortunate few but for everyone.
Stephen believes Southport must look to a new future making much better use of our many natural and community resources.
Wider society, the nature of work, the way we shop, how we holiday and our very coastline have all changed dramatically since Southport’s seaside heyday. We need to agree a new vision for Southport – one that takes account of these changes and which serves the entire town and its local communities.
In recent times, too many initiatives have focused on costly ‘attractions’, dreamt up by an increasingly remote council and a subset of the local business community. Southport is our home; it is so much more than just a shopping and day-trip destination.
Stephen believes we need to make lasting improvements across the entire town with the key aim of helping to improve everyone’s day to day lives and our local environment for the better. For this to succeed, a wider community involvement in decision making is vital. Total control of Sefton by the Labour Party just isn’t working – any more than total Tory control is working at Westminster.
We need balance and diversity – both in the council chamber and in nature.
